Japan - toxic legacy of the Fukushima disaster
The magnitude 9 Tohoku earthquake of March 2011 was powerful enough to move the largest island of Japan 2.4 metres east. The tsunami which followed sparked the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. 15,000 lives were lost.

It is six years since the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan. On 11 March 2011 - '3/11' - a devastating earthquake and series of tsunamis destroyed the cooling systems at the Fukushima power plant, one of 50 nuclear plants in the earthquake prone country.

A Yorkshire council has permitted the UK's first fracking operation since 2011. The Socialist Party opposes fracking, and fights for public ownership of energy and mass investment in green technology. Fracking is destructive wherever it happens. Anti-fracking campaigners must call for a ban on it everywhere - not just, as some prominent activists are demanding, in places of scenic beauty.

Committee for a Workers' International analysis Disaster has struck the impoverished people of Haiti once again; a powerful earthquake, early on 13 January, toppled buildings in the capital Port-au-Prince.
