15 March - ISR education day of action
Strike back at privateers
ON FRIDAY 15 March International Socialist Resistance (ISR) has called an international day of action against cuts and privatisation in education. It will include protests and student strikes in countries across Europe, in Latin America, Africa and elsewhere.
Action is already planned in Belgium, Austria, Germany, Russia, Greece, Sweden, Ireland, Brazil and five states in Nigeria.
In Argentina, a representative from the Brazilian ISR spoke at a meeting of the Inter-Barrial Assemblea Popular of Buenos Aires - the coordination body of popular committees formed in local neighborhoods of Buenos Aires.
The Inter-Barrial agreed to support 15 March, which means that occupations and protests will probably be organised by students and teachers.
The Madres de la Plaza de Mayo (the mothers of the disappeared), are also discussing supporting the day of action in Argentina.
Other organisations in Uruguay and Canada have contacted ISR about participating in 15 March after receiving a leaflet at the Porto Alegre social forum in Brazil.
In Britain we want to organise half-day student strikes and other protests at schools, colleges and universities countrywide. The idea of student strikes got a very good response on the NUS demonstration and in many colleges.
ISR will make sure that as many students as possible know about the day of action and get involved in making it a success. Successful protests and strikes around the country will tell the government, education privateers and school and college managements that we won't take any more attacks on our education system.
If you would like to organise a strike or protest at your school, college or university or find out what is going on in your area, get in contact with International Socialist Resistance (ISR) tel: 0208 558 7947 or email: [email protected] or write to: ISR, PO Box 858, London E11 1YG.

Finance appeal
The coronavirus crisis has laid bare the class character of society in numerous ways. It is making clear to many that it is the working class that keeps society running, not the CEOs of major corporations.
The results of austerity have been graphically demonstrated as public services strain to cope with the crisis.
The government has now ripped up its 'austerity' mantra and turned to policies that not long ago were denounced as socialist. But after the corona crisis, it will try to make the working class pay for it, by trying to claw back what has been given.
- The Socialist Party's material is more vital than ever, so we can continue to report from workers who are fighting for better health and safety measures, against layoffs, for adequate staffing levels, etc.
- When the health crisis subsides, we must be ready for the stormy events ahead and the need to arm workers' movements with a socialist programme - one which puts the health and needs of humanity before the profits of a few.
Inevitably, during the crisis we have not been able to sell the Socialist and raise funds in the ways we normally would.
We therefore urgently appeal to all our viewers to donate to our Fighting Fund.
