ISR/Socialist Students conference

Fight for your future

With only days to go, the ISR and Socialist Student conference looks set to be the biggest yet! Our opening 'Fight for your future' rally will have speakers talking about campaigning in their workplaces, schools and colleges.

Clare James

Linda Shuetz, from Rostock, Germany, was involved in the massive student strikes against the war, led by Youth Against War (ISR in Germany). More recently, she has been an organiser of the regular Monday demonstrations taking place throughout Germany against the huge cuts to the welfare state the government are trying to push through.

Young people have a hugely important role to play in these movements internationally - it is vital to get other young people organised and active in fighting against attacks on our future.

Sevi Yesildalli, a Socialist Party member on the PCS union national executive will be speaking about the current PCS campaign against the government's 104,000 job cuts. On 5 November, PCS members throughout the civil service took strike action in protest. Many young people work for the civil service and are facing losing their jobs, getting an increased workload and struggling to survive on low pay.

Kat Fletcher, the president of the National Union of Students (NUS), will speak on the fight against student poverty, tuition fees and the cuts in higher education.

After the speakers, there will be some time for ISR and Socialist Student members and supporters to ask questions and speak about campaigns in their areas.

After the rally there will be a number of workshops taking place (see list) for people to get a better chance to ask questions and share their ideas for campaigns.

Conference workshops:

What is socialism?

How can socialism be achieved, and would it last?

Socialist Students - building in the universities

How can we defeat tuition fees?

Fight for your rights at work

How can we get organised in the workplace? What is a trade union and why should you join?

No to racism - stop the far right

How can we combat racism and the ideas of the far-right?

Campaigning in schools and colleges.

End the occupation of Iraq. No more blood for oil!

How can US imperialism be defeated?

The new sexism. Campaigning against sexism and exploitation.

Finance appeal

The coronavirus crisis has laid bare the class character of society in numerous ways. It is making clear to many that it is the working class that keeps society running, not the CEOs of major corporations.

The results of austerity have been graphically demonstrated as public services strain to cope with the crisis.

The government has now ripped up its 'austerity' mantra and turned to policies that not long ago were denounced as socialist. But after the corona crisis, it will try to make the working class pay for it, by trying to claw back what has been given.

  • The Socialist Party's material is more vital than ever, so we can continue to report from workers who are fighting for better health and safety measures, against layoffs, for adequate staffing levels, etc.
  • When the health crisis subsides, we must be ready for the stormy events ahead and the need to arm workers' movements with a socialist programme - one which puts the health and needs of humanity before the profits of a few.
Inevitably, during the crisis we have not been able to sell the Socialist and raise funds in the ways we normally would.
We therefore urgently appeal to all our viewers to donate to our Fighting Fund.
