Stop Osborne’s cruel cuts

Having cut the taxes of the super-rich and giant corporations, Tory millionaire Chancellor George Osborne is planning to slash £5 billion from Child Tax Credit (CTC) as part of the government’s extra £12 billion cut in welfare spending.

According to the Resolution Foundation, more than two-thirds of families (2.7 million) claiming CTC are in work and families with two children will lose up to £1,700 a year as a result of the cut.

Moreover, almost two-thirds of the cut would hit the poorest 30% of households, whereas virtually none of the cut would affect the richest 40% of households. So much for the Cameron’s claim that “we’re all in it together” in suffering austerity!

Suzanne, who had previously been in receipt of CTC, told the Socialist why this attack makes her angry.

“The threshold for claiming tax credits is already criminally low – my low-paid one child family doesn’t qualify since receiving a small wage increase.

This nasty cut only serves to demonise and plunge working families further into poverty and highlights the desperately low wages of working families.

Instead of attacking ‘hard-working families’ how about attacking the bosses getting away with absurdly low pay or the vulture landlords charging extortionate rents?”
