Greenwich labour councillors given the red card

Library campaigners in Greenwich red-carded Labour councillors who refused to sign a pledge committing to do all they can to keep libraries open. The lobby was organised following the end of a consultation exercise into proposals to scrap the mobile library.

To the shame of Labour councillors, only one of them was willing to say that they will use their position as a councillor to fight for the library service. On the same night, the council was awarding the ‘freedom of the borough’ to ex-Greenwich council leader Chris Roberts whose legacy is the Tall Ships festival which now takes place in Greenwich each year at a cost of over £2 million each time.

So while libraries are closed, the people of Greenwich can console themselves by watching tall ships sail past Greenwich once a year!

The campaign to save the mobile library will now escalate to make sure that this precious and much valued service is protected.
