Low paid members of BFAWU, the bakers’ union, will be taking 48 hours strike action from 6am on 19 May after their employer Pennine Foods (Two Sisters) announced attacks on terms and conditions in a new contract.
The company aims to remove double time and time and a half on weekends and cut pay for breaks.
This is comes at the same time as they are set to rebuild the entire plant at a cost of £38 million.
The company has, over the last 14 months, been in discussions with BFAWU over the contracts, albeit the original discussions were meant to be for a pay award.
Over the last few years the company has been recruiting workers to the new contacts which are clearly are less favourable in terms of pay.
During the talks the company put a new contract on the table which has been balloted on. On all three occasions members have rejected the proposals.
BFAWU was left with no option but to ballot members for industrial action and over 85% voted in favour.
