Socialists say: we need a socialist NHS!

Socialists in the UK and the USA campaign for a genuinely socialist health care system

A great row has brewed up in the United States over health care. The British health care system, the National Health Service (NHS), has been viciously attacked. Many lies have been exposed on news channels in the UK.

But while socialists in the UK and the USA support the principle of universal health care - a health care free for all at the point of use - what do socialists say about the NHS today?

We've selected two important articles from hundreds which have appeared in The Socialist newspaper over the last few years, one from the UK and one from the USA.

Recently, Alistair's Tice, Yorkshire Socialist Party, asked what a socialist health service would be like?

Health Service condition critical

Our prescription - a socialist NHS!

THE NATIONAL Health Service is in deep crisis.

For all the Blair government's talk of putting more money into the NHS, the main effect of their years in office has been an increase in cuts, closures and privatisation.

These attacks have created opposition on a huge scale.

At the end of August around 30,000 people marched through the small town of Hayle in protest at cuts and closures of Cornwall's hospitals.

So what would a socialist health service be like?

Ty Moore, Socialist Alternative, USA wrote the following in Justice, the newspaper of Socialist Alternative - the Socialist Party's counterpart in the USA:

USA: The case for socialised medicine

THE MOST refreshing aspect of Michael Moore's new movie Sicko is the direct, clear way it tackles the root cause of our healthcare crisis: big corporations, whose sole concern is profit, that run our healthcare system and it's making us sick!

But perhaps more important, Sicko also makes a powerful case for an alternative, free, single-payer universal healthcare system, removing the profit motive...

Finance appeal

The coronavirus crisis has laid bare the class character of society in numerous ways. It is making clear to many that it is the working class that keeps society running, not the CEOs of major corporations.

The results of austerity have been graphically demonstrated as public services strain to cope with the crisis.

The government has now ripped up its 'austerity' mantra and turned to policies that not long ago were denounced as socialist. But after the corona crisis, it will try to make the working class pay for it, by trying to claw back what has been given.

  • The Socialist Party's material is more vital than ever, so we can continue to report from workers who are fighting for better health and safety measures, against layoffs, for adequate staffing levels, etc.
  • When the health crisis subsides, we must be ready for the stormy events ahead and the need to arm workers' movements with a socialist programme - one which puts the health and needs of humanity before the profits of a few.
Inevitably, during the crisis we have not been able to sell the Socialist and raise funds in the ways we normally would.
We therefore urgently appeal to all our viewers to donate to our Fighting Fund.
