Protest against Facebook censorship

A Socialist Party press release

The Socialist Party supports all measures necessary to protect all people from the threat of the coronavirus.

Yet this must be done on a fully democratic basis without any unnecessary infringement on civil and democratic liberties.

Today (24 March) the Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI) which the Socialist Party is affiliated to, attempted to do a live broadcast on Facebook on the coronavirus crisis.

Following this broadcast the video of it was blocked on Facebook in an act of political censorship.

We demand that Facebook reverse this. The Socialist Party, trade unionists and all workers must act to defend all civil liberties, including freedom of expression during this crisis.

We urge protests to be made to Facebook to reverse this. This can be done by contacting Facebook through its platform help centre directly.

Info for press

  • The Socialist Party is a campaigning, democratic organisation. Our members played a leading role on Liverpool Labour council in the 1980s when it defied Thatcher and refused to implement cuts, winning £60 million to spend on jobs and services in the city.
  • Socialist Party members were among the leaders of the struggle in the late 1980s and early 1990s when 18 million people nationwide refused to pay the hated Poll Tax. We fight against all attacks on the rights and living standards of working class people and stand for a socialist alternative.
