Socialism 2005

The case for socialism

Socialism 2005The capitalist world is increasingly wracked with poverty, economic crisis, war and terrorism. 'Natural' disasters have resulted in the preventable and needless loss of thousands of lives. At Socialism 2005 we will discuss both the alternative to the profit-driven system of global capitalism and ideas to guide the struggle for change.

Hannah Sell

At the Saturday evening rally striking Gate Gourmet workers will talk about their dispute and what lessons there are for other workers. Mark Serwotka, general secretary of the PCS, the civil service union, will tell us all about that union's struggle to defend public sector pensions and the conditions of its members.

A speaker from the Jean Charles de Menezes campaign will talk of the struggle for justice for Jean Charles, exposing the 'shoot to kill policy' that led to his tragic death. Peter Taaffe, general secretary of the Socialist Party, will put the case for socialism.

During the rest of the weekend we will be looking at past and present struggles of the working class and lessons we can learn from them. We will look at government attacks of our public services, such as education and health and the clampdown on civil liberties with the new anti-terrorism legislation. There will be debates on a range of issues including how to 'make poverty history' and how to prevent the further degradation of our environment.

Newspapers, TV and even schools and colleges claim to be neutral providers of information. As most of us know, we are given an overwhelmingly one-sided view: that poverty and deprivation are inevitable and that capitalism is the only way of organising society. We are told nothing of the millions who are fighting back against neo-liberalism and privatisation across the globe. Come and hear about these struggles and the campaigns Socialist Party members are involved in all over the country, in the trade unions, and our communities.

Discuss with us how to end the rule of profit and build a democratic socialist society and economy run to meet the needs of all.

You do not have to be a socialist, or agree with everything that we say, to take part in Socialism 2005. If you want to hear a different side of the story come along to Socialism 2005.
