On 8 July, Osborne plans a bonfire of welfare, jobs and services. This will be a billionaires' budget - specially designed to transfer huge sums of wealth from working class people to the very richest in society.

Bolstered by their general election victory, the Tories believe they have a mandate to go on the rampage. But with only 24% of the electorate voting Conservative, the truth is that they are a weak, unpopular and potentially divided government. And we're organising to fight them.

Stark choice

For young people, the choice we face is stark: we struggle, or we endure an ever more bleak future of austerity - Osborne's planned poverty.

On Budget day, the speeches, heckling and general pantomime taking place in the House of Commons could make us despair. But outside parliament's doors, on the streets of London, Manchester, Liverpool and more, the thousands demonstrating and fighting back will offer hope.

That's why Youth Fight Austerity has called for a national day of action to take place on the 8 July. We are organising protests in towns and cities around the country. Let's make sure we have mass mobilisations of young and working class people to block Osborne's billionaires' budget. We won't let the Tories rip up our futures.

As a young person, it can sometimes feel like the attacks that the Tory government are making right now don't affect you. But believe me, they do.

The cuts and caps to the benefit system and workers' pay that will be in the budget might sound distant threats to young people.

But these, as well as cuts in the NHS, local services and education, are just a few examples of how our entire lives will be affected.

Living Costs

These cuts will drive up living costs like rent and housing while at the same time driving down wages, making it all the more difficult for young people like me to have a job and find a place to live.

There are already over 1 million people who rely on food banks just to eat, including many workers. All the while, our services are being slowly sold off under our noses to private corporations who couldn't care less if they provide a good service.

They want to make money from services that we need to survive, the NHS springs to mind as a perfect example.

While the government is making all these cuts, they are also attempting to pass the blame onto migrants and benefit claimants.

This is being used as a smokescreen as they try to dismantle the entire welfare system and put even more pressure on people like me who are barely making through the week as it is.

All the while they reward the bankers who got us into this mess in the first place. The time has come for us to stop letting them do this to working class people.

I am protesting on 8 July because I want to show that there is an alternative to austerity.

Let's build that socialist alternative, starting with fighting the cuts and opposing the budget.

The coronavirus crisis has laid bare the class character of society in numerous ways. It is making clear to many that it is the working class that keeps society running, not the CEOs of major corporations.

The results of austerity have been graphically demonstrated as public services strain to cope with the crisis.

The government has now ripped up its 'austerity' mantra and turned to policies that not long ago were denounced as socialist. But after the corona crisis, it will try to make the working class pay for it, by trying to claw back what has been given.

The Socialist Party's material is more vital than ever, so we can continue to report from workers who are fighting for better health and safety measures, against layoffs, for adequate staffing levels, etc.
When the health crisis subsides, we must be ready for the stormy events ahead and the need to arm workers' movements with a socialist programme - one which puts the health and needs of humanity before the profits of a few.

Inevitably, during the crisis we have not been able to sell the Socialist and raise funds in the ways we normally would.
