Gay equality: still a long way to go

July 2007 sees the fortieth anniversary of the partial decriminalisation of sex between men in England and Wales. Limited though this was, not least in imposing an unequal age of consent, it is rightly seen as an early landmark in winning legal rights for lesbian, gay men, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people. GREG RANDALL looks at the progress made and the limits of reform. (From Socialism Today, the Socialist Party's monthly magazine - opens in new window)

Pride not profit

The annual Pride event should be about the assertion of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) demands for equality. It was started to commemorate the gay riot in the United States in 1969 which kick-started the modern LGBT rights movement.

Campaigning for LGBT rights

If you believe New Labour propaganda - which most workers saw through years ago - you would think that everything is great for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community.

Blair and his supporters within the LGBT community claim that legal reforms, such as civil partnerships, can solve all our problems. But laws aimed against sexism and racism have not ushered in a golden age for women or Black and Asian workers.

Israel: Gay Pride demo under serious threat

Reactionary Jewish and Arab groups unite in homophobic campaign:

A Gay Pride demo will be held in Jerusalem, on 10 November, against a background of vicious incitement and homophobic propaganda by reactionary Jewish and Arab organisations. This follows a similar campaign running up to the June 2005 Gay Pride demo, which lead to the stabbing of three demonstrators by an ultra right-wing settler (who was sentenced to 12 years in prison). These groups are attempting to whip up hatred and intimidation in to prevent people from attending the demonstration.

Socialist Party / International Socialist Resistance post-Pride meeting

Saturday 1 July, 3.45pm

The Clarence pub, Whitehall (Off Trafalgar Square)

THE SHIFT towards the left in social attitudes over the last ten years has meant that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have won important rights in Britain. These include an equal age of consent and the abolition of Section 28 of the Local Government Act, freeing schools from the constraints they felt were stopping them from discussing LGBT relationships.

Brokeback Mountain

ADAPTED FROM Annie Proulx's novel and directed by Ang Lee, Brokeback Mountain is a thought-provoking, poignant film about the tragic love affair of two ranch hands, with only each other, a dog, their horses, 1,000 sheep and a bottle of whisky for company. But what future faces them when they come down off the mountain?
