Why I joined the Socialist Party

I am Liam Langan, father of three, carer to my three adult brothers, martial arts instructor, taxi driver and the list goes on.

I recently joined the Socialist Party after my father showed me an interview on the Daily Politics show, Andrew Neil and TUSC chair Dave Nellist.

The few words Dave had the chance to say gave me hope, faith and a sense of possible change or revolution in government, which could lead ultimately to the end of austerity, unfair trade and global destruction.

I was so inspired that I immediately researched the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC).

Then I continued exploring and came across the Socialist Party too. I applied to join and was welcomed promptly.

I got a phone call from Robin Clapp, secretary of the South West Socialist Party. I was extremely impressed with the commitment and support that Robin has subsequently offered.

I am proud to say that I am currently gathering a group around TUSC and a few of us hope to run for council in Swindon in next year's elections. Swindon, my home town, is extremely divided socially. Times are getting harder!

Two close friends of mine have committed suicide this year due to hardship, depression and lack of opportunities, help, support or understanding.

Most of us are working our way into more debt, due to low wages and higher living costs. Governments across the world are implementing austerity and more bonuses and incentives to the already wealthy. It must stop!

People need to unite and organise together for the universal good, equality and freedom of life. I have joined the Socialist Party and support TUSC because I am fed up with just complaining about the pressures of society. Now I am an activist striving to build the arguments for socialism!
