Rent cap - not benefit caps!

'Young Londoners - Forced Out?' campaign will be lobbying the newly elected London mayor and assembly at 10am on Friday 11th May to demand rent controls, house building, jobs and an affordable future for young people in London.

Suzanne Beishon, organiser of the Young Londoners - Forced Out? campaign said: "We are lobbying the new mayor and GLA members to ask them to sign up to our Housing 5 Point Programme.

"Whilst rents in London are sky-rocketing, as bloated landlords look to fill their pockets at our expense, there have been pay freezes, job cuts and attacks on the safety net of benefits.

"Chronic low pay and an increase in people forced to take on part-time work as a result of mass unemployment has meant that in the last two years 93% of the Housing Benefit claimant increase has actually been in working households as young people struggle to plug the gap between their low pay and soaring rent.

"Young Londoners are being forced to choose between leaving the capital or homelessness.

We want the new London Assembly to back our campaign and our demands which include a mass council house building programme and rent controls and show that they are serious about tackling the growing housing crisis faced by young Londoners."
