Sri Lanka

Keep up the protests

SIRITUNGA JAYASURIYA (Siri) general secretary of the United Socialist Party, is now safely back in Sri Lanka, thanks to the campaigning work of socialists worldwide who have been putting consistent pressure on the Sri Lankan government through lobbies, protest letters etc.

Siri had been chairing an anti-war rally in Colombo on 9 January when 100 thugs led by a deputy minister of the Sri Lankan government, launched a vicious assault. The attack endangered the lives of Siri and other people at the rally who oppose the slide into civil war and the attacks on the democratic rights of the Tamils in Sri Lanka.

On 31 January, the day Siri returned home, members of the Sri Lanka Solidarity Campaign organised lobbies - both of Britain's Foreign Office and the Sri Lankan High Commission.

The lobbies were aimed at forcing the Sri Lankan government to take immediate action to stop all threats to the safety and lives of anti-war activists and to take action against the deputy minister who launched the murderous attack on 9 January.

Keep sending protests to the Sri Lankan High Commission, London W2 2LU. More information from the Sri Lanka Solidarity Campaign, PO Box 858, London E11 1YG. Donations can be made to Campaign Sri Lanka via Lloyds TSB Leytonstone branch. Sort Code 309503, account number 00023293.
