Capitalism in crisis - come and hear the case for socialism

Time to change the world

Socialism 2008 website pages: www.socialism2008.net

We are living in historic times. The utter unplanned chaos of those 'in control' of the levers of finance has been revealed to working-class people.

Rob Windsor, Socialist councillor Coventry

The self styled 'masters of the universe' have been exposed for the parasites - who have gambled away trillions - that they are. People are outraged, firstly at these creatures' wanton recklessness, but even more so at the fact that they have been bailed out with our money.

If you bet a fiver on a horse and it lost, Gordon Brown wouldn't send you a giro to compensate, yet when bankers gamble billions and we end up paying the price, they get off the hook.

People are thirsting for explanation. At a recent community meeting in our area Socialist Party councillor Dave Nellist was quizzed by everyone about what is going on and why.

Never has there been such a need to give a socialist explanation of the crisis-ridden capitalist system and what to do about it. And that is what you will get at the Rally for Socialism on 8 November, part of the Socialism 2008 weekend.

Join hundreds of workers, trade unionists and young people to hear the case for socialism. Many people are now asking "was Marx right?" Marx's economic analysis of capitalism has certainly been proved correct. But another thing he said was: "Philosophers have hitherto only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it".

Socialism 2008 will help to arm our class with the ideas and programme needed to do just that. One of the immediate requirements for successful struggle is a mass political party that represents our interests, not the bosses.

The closing rally is a debate on how the working class can fight for a political voice. Speakers include Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary; councillor Dave Nellist, national chair of the Campaign for a New Workers' Party; Hannah Sell, Socialist Party deputy general secretary; Kevin Ovenden, Respect; and Mark Steel, comedian.

Don't just attend these crucial events yourself. Tell everyone you know about them - give them the opportunity to be part of the struggle for a socialist world.
