Socialist elected to NUT executive

Martin Powell-Davies, editor of 'Classroom Teacher' and the convenor of Socialist Party Teachers, has been elected onto the NUT national executive. He fills one of the two executive seats for Inner London, after securing 857 first-preference votes to come second behind the sitting executive member Alex Kenny.

This victory comes despite Martin's candidature again not receiving the backing of the two main left groupings within the NUT.

Martin says: "I hope that the result will remind others on the left within the executive that many classroom teachers are frustrated at the union's failure to take firm action to protect teachers from the constant pressures we face.

"The platform that I stood on was clear - for a national ballot on workload and for united action to fight cuts to pay, jobs and pensions. I hope that my election can help make sure that we can build such a programme of action - to defend teachers and education."

Two other Socialist Party Teachers standing for the executive, Jane Nellist and Rachael Thomas, were not elected in their districts but both received good support. Rachael, backed by Bristol NUT, was only 50 votes short of winning a seat.

Inner London Result:

Alex Kenny 1,100 (elected)

Martin Powell-Davies 857 (elected)

Sara Tomlinson 682
