Support for socialists Ian Page and Chris Flood
A number of messages of support have been sent to Ian Page and Chris Flood after they lost their council seats in the Telegraph Hill ward in Lewisham, south London. We print a selection here:
Dear Chris and Ian
"I know that I speak for hundreds of local people who voted for you both who say we are SO sorry that you did not win. Lewisham is a poorer place without you and I am devastated that the unintended consequence of ensuring that the Tories didn't get in meant squeezing the real alternative out!"
"Since I have moved into this area it's the socialists who have been most visible in our community and we can't fault your commitment to local issues. I hope you will get re elected."
"Will speak soon and keep you updated on the skate board campaign. I'd still like your help as you have been with us from the start."
"I have never been one to get involved in politics but I have always appreciated the many things you have done for me, to lend your support in various problems and situations I have had with Lewisham council over the last few years. You have been a great help and have shown genuine kindness."
"Thank you for keeping in touch. I'm sure that people like yourselves (that truly are interested in the needs of the people) can be of much help to the community without having to be councillors. What is happening now is just unreal... and unfortunately I think we (the people) will be the first to pay for all this in the long term."
"I'm very sorry that you won't be officially working in Telegraph Hill for this term. It is a real loss for the ward, as everyone that I have come into contact with really appreciates the help that you have given them. I think it is a real loss for the Assembly too as many people come along because you were involved. I hope this won't put you off running in the future."
"Thank you very very much for all the hard work, countless hours and support you have given to local campaigns. You were a formidable, effective and honest team who stood on a ticket of principle and integrity. My wish for you both is that you are able to step back, spend quality time with the family and friends and brace yourselves for active undercover work!"
