Socialist Students campaign reports

    Socialist Students

Socialist Students is a campaigning organisation on campuses across the country supported by the Socialist Party.

    Sheffield

Latin American students at Sheffield University celebrated the traditional Mexican “Day of the Dead” festival on 1-2 November.

After traditional Mexican dances, they presented the altar to the dead. On this occasion, to both Frida Kahlo and the 43 students from Ayotzinapa who ‘disappeared’ after being arrested on 26 September.

Mexican student socialist Ramon Centeno gave a speech explaining the disappearances. Socialist Stu-dents joined the protest, calling for solidarity with “Normalista” education activists and justice for the disappeared.

    Yorkshire

Socialist Students groups are now active on every university campus in Yorkshire.

On 25 October, students held a regional conference attended by 30 delegates.

In addition to inspiring discussions on current affairs and Marxist theory, the conference agreed to elect a regional student committee.

    Hatfield

An introduction to socialist ideas was warmly received by students in Hatfield. The opening meeting on 27 October was attended by 14, including students from Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire Universities.

Activists gained a lot of attention during the day when campaigning against tuition fees and high rents and bus fares.

This year my sixth form Marxist discussion group is bigger and more active than ever. We have seven new members, and two have since joined the Socialist Party. I explained Socialism 2014 is an excellent opportunity to learn about our ideas from someone, meet other comrades and listen to inspirational international speakers. They jumped at the opportunity.

“We are bringing at least four down for the full weekend and another two for the Sunday. Socialism 2014 is looking to be the biggest and best yet, and I’m thrilled to be taking so many new comrades with me.”
