A Delivery driver

I work as a pizza delivery driver. We have to use our own cars for work and we are paid £1 for fuel for each delivery we do, no matter the journey.

During the football rush, and working five days, I made 38 deliveries, meaning I should have received £38 on ‘fuel day’. However, I was only given £8. Thirty crucial pounds lost!

The management sort through all of the recorded drops to be paid. However, commonly they have failed to give the correct amount.

I now have to wait till the following week to get the money. I have no money left as it is the end of the month; I have had to spare what little I have to go towards the car’s MOT. The money was vital to enable me to pay for the fuel to work this week.

Because I cannot do my job due to the bosses screwing up yet again, my store manager –  trying his best with no help from these bosses – is paying £20 out of what little money he has left for me to fuel up and work. While I am pleased he is trying to get it sorted and giving me the money in the meantime, a local manager should not have to be paying my fuel money out of his own pocket for a mistake of his bosses.

Money for deliveries should be done in-house by the workers who run and operate the store, rather than one person on a ridiculous pay rate controlling seven-plus stores and all the individual drivers’ pay.

£30 is a lot of fuel money, it’s around three days of work. The frustration is incredible as these things can make or break someone being able to work for their livelihoods.

Luckily, Socialist Party members helped me through the steps I need to resolve this. This is why I cannot stress enough the importance of trade unions in the workplace.
