Bite your tongue, or shout and be heard?
Frank Hammond, Coventry Socialist Party
Calling all students, have you heard of the Socialist Students society? Joining Coventry University in September, and not coming from anywhere near, I was eager to look around me and see what this small city could possibly offer.
Being a disabled working-class lad, it’s been easy for me to see the injustice in the world, like many others. It’s a damn crime, and unfortunately we live in a world where it’s plain to see.
So instead of shutting my eyes and plugging my ears, fulfilling the capitalist system’s needs, when it came time to looking for student societies, one immediately caught my eye – the Socialist Students society.
I spoke with the Socialist Students and Socialist Party members running the campaign stall to gain an understanding of the surrounding area’s social and political climate, the members’ individual beliefs, and where they were hoping to take these ideas.
Pleasantly surprised to meet people with strong-willed, determined, and empathetic attitudes, I’ve chosen to sign up and get actively involved, accepting a formal invite to a meeting to further discuss our intentions and desires to create a better life for people, and how we can achieve that.
Coming from an area where people are constantly misguided by the media, or purposefully distracted from the injustice, I have felt nothing but pride and gratitude to have been introduced to my optimistic community with open arms and an opportunity to have a say.
After gathering locally with our members, it’s refreshing to drink in the pure passion I’ve witnessed, and to be educated on the change that is happening in Coventry and surrounding areas right now.
And it’s bigger than we think. Because each and every one of us have a voice.
It’s just our choice to bite our tongue, or shout and be heard. What choice will you make?
Join Socialist Students and the Socialist Party today, and be active in the quest for change.
