Food boss profits high, food bank supplies run dry

The number of food parcels distributed by food bank, The Trussell Trust, has increased by 81% in the five years to the end of March. No doubt, with the price of everything rising, that will increase further still. A food bank in Liverpool reports 300 queueing for 150 parcels. As more and more of us are squeezed, demand outstrips supply.

But not all of us are feeling the pinch. Louis Dreyfus, one of the four grain giants that do 70% of global grain trade, increased its profits by more than 80% on 2021. In the UK, supermarket Tesco tripled its profits in 2021. Other major supermarkets did very well too. Like energy, water and housing too, super-rich capitalists are being allowed to enrich themselves at our expense, depriving us of what we need to survive. We need a system based on democratic public ownership so we can plan and ensure supply to meet the needs of all.
