The need for socialism is clearer than ever!
Lenny Shail, Socialism 2022 organiser
2022 will go down in history as the year the working class across Britain put strikes back on the agenda. The Tories have declared class war – planning mass redistribution of wealth from the working class and poor to the already obscenely rich. But we are fighting back!
Socialism 2022 is the event where hundreds of workers, socialists, trade unionists and young people discuss how we can win.
The national strikes have inspired millions. They have given a glimpse of the potential power the working class has, not just to win pay rises and kick out the Tories – but to organise to change society. That means starting to democratically plan society to end the chaos of capitalism. How can the working class step up this fight? Are we heading for a general strike? What is needed to realise workers’ potential and how to prepare for that will be major themes of the Socialism 2022 weekend.
In the face of mass workers’ action and against a background of disastrous economic and social crisis, the Tory party is in a state of civil war and disintegration. They could be brought down at any moment, and a general election is on the cards. But who trusts Starmer’s Labour? What’s the alternative? Can we fight the class struggle at the ballot box? Building a workers’ political voice will also be a theme of the event.
But it isn’t just Britain that is wracked by chaos. You could stick a pin in a map of the world and not find anywhere where there is stability for capitalism. Revolutionary movements have erupted in Sri Lanka and ousted a president! Iranian women, youth and workers have taken to the streets. The US working class has begun to organise and mobilise with union drives and strike waves. And that’s to name just a few examples that will be discussed in workshops at Socialism 2022.
A future of more barbaric wars, ever-increasing poverty, deprivation and climate catastrophe – or a struggle for socialist change: that is the choice facing the working class globally. Our lives and our future are not safe in the hands of the capitalist rulers and their system.
But the case for socialist change must be fought for. Socialism 2022 is the best place to meet hundreds of others to discuss, debate, listen and learn more about how best we can organise and fightback to change the world along socialist lines.
