Last year, with an average of eight to ten people attending Socialist Students meetings, we showed solidarity on picket lines, and did campaign stalls. Speakers at our meetings included University and College Union (UCU), Unite the Union and the local trades union council.

This year, we have seen impressive growth. Our numbers have more than doubled, and enthusiasm is higher than ever.

We have very interesting and complex conversations, and many Socialist Students members have attended local picket lines to show solidarity with the dockers and transport union RMT. Regular campaign stalls have raised the necessity of providing accessible late-night public transport via the Night Bus Campaign.

Socialist Students has been campaigning most weeks and spreading socialist ideas at many protests. There has been far more engagement than last year; students are more angry towards the Tory government and the capitalist system.

There is an immensely strong desire for an alternative to the current system, and more students see socialism as this alternative. More students have been reaching out to us, looking to learn more about socialism, and getting involved in action on and off campus.

Capitalism is in crisis, students feel underrepresented and oppressed, and there is a blatant need for a socialist alternative.
