UNIVERSITY BOSSES are resorting to blackmail in order to make sure the government accepts (at the very least) the hefty tuition fees rises recommended by the Browne Review. Sources from Cambridge University have suggested that the university may opt to privatise itself if the government doesn’t go far enough in allowing universities to ‘plug their deficit’.
Essentially this would allow them to charge sky high fees without having to give any of the money to the government to fund education generally. It would also release them from the obligation to admit a certain proportion of students from poorer backgrounds.
This makes it even clearer that the elite universities are waiting on tenterhooks to put fees up to the maximum they are allowed, with no regard for the working class students who will be locked out of quality education by the two-tier system this will create.
