Coventry Socialist Party campaign stall

“Support the strikes”. That was the rallying cry from a Coventry resident happy to see the Socialist Party campaigning to back the strike wave and demands for decent pay rises.

She was one of multiple people we met, just on 10 December, interested in joining the Socialist Party, and building the working-class fightback. More people also bought copies of the Socialist, with the front page calling for unions to organise for a 24-hour general strike.

Meanwhile, we experienced even more anger against the parking charges at the hospital. We heard from multiple former NHS workers who quit because the charges took so much out of their wages.

And, unfortunately, we had two separate stories of people who had to pay out hundreds of pounds visiting a dying relative in hospital. One pointed out if she did not have the money saved, she would not have been able to say goodbye.

We’re determined to build the fight against these grotesque parking charges. I hate hearing how much suffering they cause.

One private company wants to keep making its millions of pounds, so thousands of Coventry’s NHS workers, patients, and their relatives have to suffer. It is fundamentally cruel, and I cannot wait to see the private companies kicked out of the car parks and out of the NHS entirely.
