West Cheshire Against Cuts launch meeting

Fifty-five people attended the launch of West Cheshire against cuts this Thursday.

Cheshire Socialist Party

The mood was lively and when the idea of promoting the ‘S’ word (‘Socialism’) was mentioned it was greeted with much applause.

A speaker from the civil servants union, the PCS, highlighted the tax gap and job creation as alternatives to the governments cuts agenda.

Socialist Party members highlighted the upcoming action of the student protests on the 9th Dec, the Liverpool demo on the 11th and the TUC national demo in March.

Many people spoke about the need for a Poll Tax style movement and having anticipated this response we were able to promote the Socialist Party public meeting on ‘How we Beat the Poll Tax’.

Overhearing conversations on the way out it seemed that this meeting had energised and given confidence to all that attended and we look forward building the movement in Chester and linking it up with a national anti-cuts movement.

The Poll Tax was introduced by the Tory Government under Thatcher. It was defeated by a mass campaign of non payment.

What are the lessons for today’s anti-cuts campaigns?
