Socialist Party members from across the South West will be at the UK Pride event in Weston-super-Mare putting forward our party’s socialist programme to achieve LGBTQ+ liberation. Both the Tories and Labour are unleashing attacks on our lives and furthering divisions.

Tory home secretary Suella Braverman says: “We will not be able to sustain an asylum system if in effect simply being gay, or a woman, and fearful of discrimination in your country of origin is sufficient to qualify for protection”. If Braverman gets her way, this will make it even easier for people to be deported to countries where being gay is effectively a death warrant.

Labour leader Keir Starmer says that self-ID for trans people is not the  “right way forward”. He has also stated that a woman is “an adult female”, repeating a well-known transphobic slogan – despite being happy to show his face at Pride events with a rainbow and a set of false promises.

We will be there arguing that we can’t let the Tories divide us – or Labour either! Organising together to challenge these attacks is necessary.

Ultimately, we need to bring an end to capitalism, which relies on these divisions to survive. But we must also fight doggedly against every form of oppression at the same time. We need good-quality council housing so that people can live their lives away from abuse, and an immediate increase in the minimum wage to £15 an hour.

We will be having a meeting after Pride to discuss how we will organise and fight for our liberation through socialism. We hope to see Pride attendees there!
