Join the socialists: ‘I am ‘bothered’ by cuts and privatisation’

Samuel Fisher, Reading Socialist Party

I have always had opinions on politics, and been on the left side of the debate. Helping people out – yes; nationalising rail – definitely; making a fairer and more equal society – of course.

I have been in contact with my MP and my councillors over certain issues. My councillor asked: “That is not even in your area. Why are you bothered?” I replied: “It is not just about me. It is about that area and the people who live there.”.

It probably comes from my family, especially where my parents were looking after relatives, and putting others before themselves. Even when they were not feeling up to it, my parents made sure to take them out shopping, or to invite them over for tea or Sunday lunch.

I saw Socialist Party posters up in the town, and when a flyer came in the post that there was a local public meeting, I decided to go along. I agreed with a majority of what was said.

When I looked at ‘What we stand for’ at the back of the Socialist paper, of all the parties, this came closest to my beliefs. After attending a few public meetings, I decided to join, and have not looked back.
