Unite Notts calls for political representation discussion

Jon Dale, Mansfield Socialist Party

There was unanimous support at Unite’s Nottinghamshire Area Activists meeting for a motion calling for a discussion on our union’s political representation. I moved a motion from the Unite health branch, supporting the 18 Broxtowe councillors who left the Labour Party a few months ago.

The motion called on Unite East Midlands Regional Committee to invite the councillors for a discussion. It pointed out their programme against cuts was similar to Unite’s.

Meanwhile, Labour councillors have made Unite members redundant in Nottingham and elsewhere, and are trying to cut Unite members’ pay in Birmingham bins. The motion was seconded by a Nottingham worker, whose team of specialised carers was closed down by the Labour council.
