Why I joined the Socialist Party

The old unwritten social contract is broken

I have been interested in politics for a few years. But it was only when the new Labour government came in that I really saw the need for a political alternative outside of the major capitalist parties.

Since joining the Socialist Party, I have been involved in various political work. Most recently, helping to canvass for a local by-election that we stood in. I was honestly surprised to see how open people were to political alternatives, even in a supposedly affluent area.

Especially people of my generation – early 20s – we’re really seeing the breakdown of the old unwritten social contract. A full-time job should be able to afford food, rent or mortgage, a car etc.

For a lot of people, this just isn’t a reality anymore. The need for genuine working-class political representation is greater than ever.
