On Wednesday 25 June, Adaramoye Michael Lenin, a member of the Democratic Socialist Movement, the Socialist Party’s sister party in Nigeria, faces trial – alongside a number of other activists, including Mosiu Sodiq – charged with treason, which carries the death penalty.
At least 1,400 peaceful protesters have been detained, mostly without trial, following #EndBadGovernance protests in August 2024 against hunger, economic and social crisis. An Amnesty International report found at least 24 protesters were killed by government forces.
Nigeria Solidarity has been building an international campaign calling for the release of the protesters. Jeremy Corbyn MP and prominent trade unionists have signed the petition on nigeriasolidarity.com calling for the dropping of the charges against the accused.
A protest will take place outside of the Nigeria High Commission in London on 25 June.
