Donald Trump’s official state visit to the UK for later this year has been confirmed by Buckingham Palace, and will most likely take place around September.
Trump will come advertising all the ‘goods’ of his MAGA campaign: a rollback of policies meant to protect the environment; state violence against migrants carried out by ICE; continued support of the Israeli state’s slaughter of Palestinians, as well as ramped up tensions with Iran which could teeter into global conflict.
And who do we have on our end to represent the interests of the British public? Keir Starmer, a lily-livered pro-capitalist politician at war with his own party over benefit cuts.
There is no doubt that Starmer will act as Trump’s lapdog, desperate to maintain friendship with this increasingly volatile ally, and willing to throw the British working class under the bus for it.
Last year’s general election saw the Tories firmly kicked into the dust, but one year later it’s clear that all Labour can offer is a continuation of Tory austerity. We deserve better than this.
Hunger for change is in the air. Protesters in America have bravely stood against ramped-up activity from ICE, and the success of Zohran Mamdani in the 2025 NYC Democratic mayoral primary shows that when a politician puts forward reforms in workers’ interests, they can find success.
Students in schools, colleges, and universities have the opportunity to come together and raise their voice, not just against Trump, but the entire capitalist system, which only offers them austerity, debt, and devastation. That is why Socialist Students is organising the Youth Walkout Against Trump campaign, helping to bring together students across the country, to walk out on the day Trump visits parliament.
