Today, Wednesday 28 March, teachers in the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and lecturers in some sectors of the University and College Union (UCU) have taken strike action as part of the continuing battle to defend public sector pensions.

Trade unionists from a number of other unions attended the strike-day demonstration to give support to the London teachers’ and lecturers’ action.
General secretary of the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS), Mark Serwotka, was present, and said to the Socialist:
“I’ve just had the pleasure of addressing the strike rally here in central London of teachers and lecturers who are striking today to defend their pensions.
And there are two reasons why PCS has urged members to come to the rally today. One is to show our support for striking public sector workers in London, but also to make our message clear, that we now want to see within a matter of weeks further widespread national industrial action across the public sector, and our executive meets in three weeks time to discuss setting those days.
So I hope that we’ve got the message across that today’s important action should be seen as a stepping stone towards much bigger action across the whole of the UK”.
