Boris’s bull
Tory London mayor Boris Johnson is standing up for minorities, “from the homeless to Irish travellers to ex-gang members… and the very, very rich”!
“We should stop bashing the rich. On the contrary… we should be offering them humble and hearty thanks,” he trumpeted.
It’s not clear which part of Boris’s anatomy uttered these words in a recent Daily Telegraph interview but it probably wasn’t his mouth!
To justify this nonsense Boris cites the contribution the super-rich make in taxes, conveniently forgetting to mention their tax avoidance practices using a myriad of legal loopholes which his party refuses to close.
Johnson deliberately nurtures his public persona of an ‘establishment outsider’, in order to boost his electoral standing.
In reality he is a die-hard Tory reactionary, happy to perpetuate a socially divisive, exploitative capitalist system.
Fat cats
Perhaps it was the news that bosses at the 100 top FTSE companies have seen their earnings increase by an average 14% in 2012-13 (while workers’ pay has only increased by 0.7%), that prompted Boris to defend the status quo.
- Average pay for a director of a FTSE 100 firm is £3.3 million
- Top bosses’ pay is growing 20 times faster than that of the average worker
- Over the past ten years, the median total earnings of a FTSE 100 chief executive has gone up by 243%
Empty stomachs
As the super-rich get ever richer, shocking new figures have been released showing that hospital admissions of people suffering from malnutrition in the UK shot up from 3,161 in 2008-09 to 5,499 in 2012.
This 57% increase coincides with a dramatic rise in the cost of living and the huge increase in the number of households seeking assistance from food charities.
The number of people suffering rickets – a traditional ‘poverty disease’ caused by a vitamin D deficiency – has also leapt from 561 cases in 2008-09 to 702 last year.
Permanent austerity
While starving people were being treated in hospital, Tory PM David Cameron and fellow city bigwigs were stuffing their gullets at the Lord Mayor’s banquet in London.
The message to his fellow millionaires was the need for a government of ‘permanent austerity’ ie cuts in spending on public services and welfare… forever!
It’s magic
Now you see it, now you don’t. But the disappearance of ten years of online Tory party leaders’ speeches wasn’t caused by a wave of a magician’s wand but apparently by someone in the nasty party pressing a delete key.
All evidence of the party’s pledges made between 2000 and 2010, when in opposition, has disappeared from the Tories’ website.
These included protecting the NHS, retaining Sure Start centres, pursuing a green agenda for industry, scrapping mega-expensive PFI schemes…
