Left victory in PCS elections
THE ELECTIONS for the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) demonstrate the support of the membership for our strategy to defend jobs and pay.
Marion Lloyd PCS NEC, personal capacity
The almost clean sweep of the Democracy Alliance slate is a ringing endorsement of the tactics and strategy employed by Left Unity, within which Socialist Party members have a key influence, in the campaign to defend jobs, pay and services.
It also sends a clear message to the government that this union will not tolerate the continued attacks against PCS and its membership.
Despite opposition from two right-wing groups and also a small band of 'lefts', Left Unity has emerged victorious.
We appeal to anybody misled into supporting the 'independent left' to come back on board and join Left Unity, to unite around our campaign to take the union forward and improve conditions for our members.
The re-election shows the willingness of the members to fight back against government attacks. It is a kick in the teeth to the employer and to those in the union who wanted to de-escalate the dispute.
But we cannot be complacent. We still have a lot of work to do.
