ON 21-22 June, the European Union’s (EU) political elite will hold a summit in Seville, Spain. Outside their sumptuous surroundings, thousands of anti-capitalist protesters will be demonstrating against them and their policies.
Clare James, ISR
The EU summit is taking place at a time of military conflict in the Middle East and deep political and economic crisis around the world. Fighting between Pakistan and India threatens a terrifying nuclear war.
The day before the EU summit start there will be a one-day general strike, called by the Spanish trade unions against government attacks on unemployment benefits. (see article above)
These measures are similar to the hated Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) and welfare to work schemes in Britain and will force young people, in particular, into low paid, short term work.
The talk of the European and US governments about ‘democracy and freedom’ are nothing more than a cover for their own agenda to defend profits and gain more influence and power around the world.
This hypocrisy is exactly what many people will be protesting about in Seville, alongside issues such as anti-racism, no to cuts in education and no to war.
Members of International Socialist Resistance (ISR) and the Socialist Party of England and Wales will be taking part in these protests.
