We need workers' MPs on a worker's wage

MPs will get a pay rise from 1 April. Their MP salary will go up by £2,212 next year, and that’s not counting any extras! They also get a place to stay in London provided for free, some even claim expenses despite already owning a home in capital!

For MPs, supposedly elected to represent us, the sky is the limit for how much they can earn in second jobs. After the Owen Paterson lobbying scandal at the end of 2021, the Tories made promises for limits on second jobs. Now they have changed their tune. The government now describes such measures as ‘impractical’.

A practical solution to political representatives divorced from the reality working-class people’s lives, is for MPs to be paid a worker’s wage, and not to benefit from any material privileges.
