Campaigning for a Socialist World

The conference (or Congress) of the Socialist Party in England and Wales took place in London on 16-18 February 2002. Over 250 party members attended throughout the three days.

The attendance and the discussions at the conference were a good reflection of the high morale of the party and a good indicator of the work the party is doing.

The conference discussions included sessions on developments in Britain; the changes that were taking place in the trade union movement; our work amongst young people; building our party; global developments after 11 September and a report on the work of our international organisation the Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI).

Every session at the conference was oversubscribed with speakers, and it was principally the branch delegates who spoke in the conference. In total, 69 delegates spoke through the three days, in addition to 13 platform speakers.

The fighting fund collection for party funds raised over £7,300.

One highlight, amongst a number at the conference, was the discussion on industrial work and strategy, which is gaining special importance now, as there are indications of resurgence of militant workers’ struggles and strike action in Britain.

As well as the main resolutions there were also resolutions passed on work amongst women, local campaigning and a statement on our relationships with the Socialist Alliance.

A new National Committee was also elected at the conference.

We are printing in this pamphlet some of the main conference documents and statements. Also we are including edited extracts from some of the main resolutions that were passed.
