Election victories for class fighters

NEWS IS coming in of encouraging election results of anti-cuts campaigners around the country. The firefighter Phil Jordan, interviewed in The Socialist last week, came second in Tuffley ward in Gloucester City. With 594 votes (33.4%), he beat both Labour and the Liberals.

In Barrow, Michael Stephenson, standing for a campaign against academies, sensationally ousted Tory council leader Bill Joughin in the local elections.

Joughin's deputy, Jack Richardson, only managed to hold on to his seat after a challenge by Chloe Lancaster, by one vote after three recounts.

The Tories had come out in favour of plans to replace three local schools with an academy. It shows that those who stand up and fight the parties of privatisation and cuts can win.

Chris Moore and Derek McMillan
The Socialist would welcome reports from readers of any other anti-cuts election successes.
