Merseyside CNWP calls for socialist policies

The following resolution, on the world economic crisis, was unanimously carried at a meeting of the Merseyside Campaign for a New Workers Party on 18 September.

"This campaign recognises that the turmoil in the world banking system is evidence of capitalism's basic instability which is resulting in catastrophe for millions of working class families.

We note that even capitalist spokesmen, including every section of the capitalist media, after years of supporting the unfettered market, are attacking the greed of CEOs whose reckless policies have been a major factor in the current crisis.

The complete absence of any criticism of the system and the total absence of a positive response by New Labour confirms the Party's utter bankruptcy and incapacity to offer even a minor lead to the working class, when even the right-wing Bush administration has nationalised big finance companies.

A planned socialist economy is an absolute necessity if the problems facing the working class are to be resolved.

We call for the public ownership, under democratic workers' control and management, of the banks and finance industry as part of a socialist planned economy so that industry can be run and planned in the interests of society as a whole.

The crisis of working class leadership confirms the necessity for the Campaign for a New Workers Party."
