Youth Against Racism gig

Over 70 people crammed into the Urban Bar in Whitechapel on Saturday night as Youth Against Racism in Europe (YRE) held another successful gig in London. The event was jointly sponsored by the PCS and FBU unions.

On the night The Yesmen, opened with their unique brand of mayhem. At one stage the drummer lost his shirt and half the drum kit as the band belted out some heavy metal tunes.

In a complete change of tone they were followed by acoustic hip-hop from Appleseed who opened with a song entitled 'Nancy'. A well known Socialist Party member, of a similar nomenclature, was greatly amused by some of the adult-rated lyrics of this song.

Ben Robinson then spoke from YRE. In a week dominated by news of the BNP membership list, Ben explained that the BNP has a presence across the country thanks, in part, to New Labour's abandonment of many working-class communities. His call for a new party of the left to combat the threat of the BNP by providing a real political voice for working-class people received a warm response.

The live music ended with an excellent performance from Magnetic Attraction but the dj continued to play into the small hours with unconfirmed reports that the final reveller departed at 4am.
