Campaign to Defeat Fees

KENT UNIVERSITY Socialist Students held a memorable Campaign to Defeat Fees (CDF) day of action (see The Socialist 522) on 29 February. Two of our members dressed up as a 'fat cat philanthropist' and a 'student in chains' to create a powerful image of how tuition fees burden and chain university students with debt.

As well as a petition, which plenty of students and some lecturers signed, we invited students to write down an estimate of how much debt they thought they would be in at the end of their degree on a big white sheet. This symbolic 'wall of debt' captured students' imagination. We also thoroughly enjoyed the occasion even if it was a particularly windy day.
