Josh Harper, Bristol North Socialist Party
Bristol Pride on 19 July was my first time helping out at a campaign stall with the Socialist Party.
Many were protesting the recent Supreme Court ruling, which is being used to weaken the rights and security of transgender people. I also saw lots of banners opposing ongoing austerity policies, which is worsening the living conditions of LGBTQ+ people.
The Socialist Party attended the march to stand in solidarity and engage with the LQBTQ+ community.
I felt a little awkward at first. But after ten minutes of “hellos” and handing out leaflets to passers-by, it started to feel good. Many people gladly accepted the Socialist Party’s material, and seemed enthusiastic about our message.
I had a couple of conversations with members of the public. It was really nice to hear about their ideas and experiences. This helped me develop my political understanding, but also made me realise I have lots to learn.
It felt good to be active, and to be part of something bigger.
