Adam Tyas, Coventry Socialist Party
I have known for a long time that there is oppression of people and vast inequality in our society.
I learnt over several years the political ideology of the ruling class and parties; how working people are exploited for greater profits for the very richest, and how minorities are victimised for the failings of capitalism – workers are encouraged to point the finger of blame at a colleague rather than the boss.
In my home city of Hull I have seen how the destruction of industry and local cuts to public services have destroyed people’s livelihoods and their prospects.
I came to the realisation that reforming capitalism isn’t enough. The bosses might be forced to agree to paying a bit more tax to redistribute a small amount of their wealth, but ultimately they will find other ways to try to claw it back.
I knew about the Socialist Party through a friend and fellow member in Liverpool, but never actually looked at joining until I went to a Your Party conference in Leicester.
The buzz and feeling of hope from the idea of a new mass workers’ party fighting for socialism really drew me in to the idea that socialism is possible. However, the faltering around Your Party left me feeling that I needed and wanted to join a long-standing force in the struggle for socialism, to work within the wider Your Party activities and outside of it too.
So I passed on my details to the Socialist Party members on their campaign stall at that meeting. It was as easy as that. I was put in touch with the Coventry branch, where I live.
The Socialist Party offers experience, discussion, and thought-out impactful action on local, national, and trade union issues.
The party fights most closely for what I believe in and in a way that makes a difference. The emphasis on pulling trade union leaderships away from the existing capitalist parties to fight for socialist policies is important, and what I think is the best way to fight for working people.
