Anna Beishon, York St John Socialist Students
York St John Socialist Students had our first official meeting, a film showing of ‘Pride’, to kick off Pride month. It’s based on the true events of solidarity between miners and LGBTQ+ activists during the 1984-1985 strike.
25 students attended and the film was well received, provoking thought on the importance of unity between different sections of the working class, and how collective struggle can overcome prejudice and build long-lasting solidarity. £66 was raised for our campaigns.
The story of ‘Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners’ (LGSM) is testament to how common struggles against oppression can bring people together. The positive response to this screening shows the continued interest in socialist principles among young people, and the need for solidarity in the battles ahead.
