On 20 November, we will be joining them!
‘Fight for our future, not their wars’
Sign up to build the international youth walkout
On Friday 25 September, Socialist Students held a rally in solidarity with striking German students at the German Embassy in London. We carry a shortened extract of the speech from Adam Powell-Davies, Socialist Students national organiser
Solidarity with the tens of thousands of young people who have again today walked out of class, taking action against the threat of military conscription in Germany!
This follows on from a tens of thousands-strong movement that has continued since the start of this year. It is out of their inspiring example that we are now taking part in an international youth strike on 20 November, of young people all across Europe under the slogan ‘fight for our future not their wars!’
In many ways, young people in Germany are on the sharp edge of the drive by governments all around the world to increase military spending. Continuing their business as usual, defending the interests of the super-rich and the capitalist billionaires day-to-day, increasingly looking for military means in order to do so.
In Britain, this Labour government wants to spend £25 billion per year extra on the military. That sum would be more than enough to scrap uni tuition fees to reintroduce maintenance grants, for example.
The increase on military spending around the world shines a light on the question of who makes decisions in society, and in whose interests. Should it be a tiny few capitalist billionaires at the top and their political representatives, or should it be the majority – using wealth, resources and technology to meet our needs?
Socialist Students says it’s the latter. We stand for a socialist society, run democratically by the working class to meet the needs of all, not the profits and warmongering interests of a tiny few at the top.
So we stand in full solidarity with young people in Germany who are walking out today. And on 20 November, we will be joining them!

Socialist Students groups around Britain organised activities, campaigning in solidarity with the German students and building for 20 November.
The newly formed York St John University Socialist Students society held it’s first ever protest in solidarity with the German student strike.
Students gathered outside the students union to leaflet passers by. Anna and Louie from Socialist Students spoke about the strikes in Germany, linking it to conditions here as the Burnham government plans to fill the over £11 billion in extra military spending proposed but not funded by Starmer.
The protest was joined by several students at their first protest and/or Socialist Students activity, including one from Germany, and several students stopping to listen.
