1 May marks International Workers’ Day, an event where socialists and workers’ movement activists of all backgrounds celebrate the rich history of working-class struggle and commemorate the original fight for an eight-hour working day, which began over one hundred years ago.

The celebration this year takes place against the backdrop of workers moving into struggle to defend their pay and conditions.

The Socialist newspaper has been a familiar sight on many picket lines, carrying messages of support, reporting on developments in industrial struggles, and providing a clear political programme to take the fight forwards. As such, it is more important than ever that the Socialist continues to be produced and sold – to provide a working-class alternative to the bosses’ media.

Every year, the Socialist runs a campaign of May Day greetings where trade union branches, community campaign groups, student societies and more help fund the work that we do. By making a donation for a ‘greeting’ in the pages of our paper this shows a message of support from an organisation and carries out a practical act of financial solidarity.

Last year we received over 75 greetings from many different trade union bodies and campaign groups, reflecting the widespread impact the Socialist has across different workplaces and campaigns.

If you have been on strike this year, fought back against closures to public services or campaigned against the cost-of-living crisis on campus, then consider taking part in this May Day tradition by making a contribution from your trade union branch or organisation to support the paper which has supported you.

This year, for an extra £40 on top of a greeting you can get the Socialist delivered to your union office or workplace for a year.

If you know any other individuals or groups that have received support from the Socialist then consider asking them about taking out a greeting as well.

2023 will be a year of fighting back against the bosses and their corrupt politicians and continuing the struggle for socialism. The Socialist will be there every step of the way, providing a fighting voice for all workers.
