Lewis Rees, Liverpool Unite Community NW567

People wonder what a potential Labour government will look like. Many working people already understand what Keir Starmer’s Labour Party is like, highlighted by his praise of hated Tory prime minister Margaret Thatcher. These sentiments are prevalent in the trade union movement.

At my first Unite Community meeting, I put forward a motion, which was passed unanimously, that acknowledges and supports trade unionists standing in elections, with the prospect of financial support being provided by associated members.

The meeting also passed another motion unanimously to disaffiliate from the Labour Party. What was evident amongst members was a consensus understanding that Labour is positioning itself to be the party of big business.

It was acknowledged that the residing Liverpool City Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram has shown active support for the development of freeports, a black hole for any semblance of workers’ rights.

The need for a new mass workers’ party is more vital than ever. And the trade unions are vital to that, and the fight for socialism.
