Karen Seymour, Mansfield Socialist Party
An inspiring film was shown at our East Midlands Socialist Party conference, which highlighted the region’s record, such as anti-cuts campaigns, supporting workers on strike, anti-war demonstrations, campaign stalls, and public meetings.
Against the backdrop of a cost-of-living crisis, low economic growth and productivity, and workers expected to pay the price for capitalism’s failure, Isai Marijerla, Socialist Party national treasurer, introduced the first discussion, an overview of the capitalist crisis in Britain and worldwide.
Starmer
Isai painted a picture of a chaotic system that breeds war, poverty and exploitation, and which serves the elite at the expense of workers. She also outlined the prospect for this to continue under a Keir Starmer government.
With a general election looming, Seamus Smyth introduced a discussion on building the Socialist Party, highlighting our achievements in building our membership, raising fighting fund, and supporting picket lines.
Isai spoke about the work of the international organisation to which the Socialist Party is affiliated, the Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI), which is celebrating its 50th year (see socialistworld.net), building support for world socialism.
Our general election appeal raised £1,107. One comrade, who claims benefits, donated £100. We all left feeling motivated, determined and energised.
