Eric Segal, Kent Socialist Party
Momtaz Khanom is standing against the slaughter in Gaza, and as the voice of the marginalised people in our society – young and old, the poor and the sick, the low-paid and the homeless. 40 people attended her launch meeting as Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) parliamentary candidate in Folkestone and Hythe.
Momtaz told the audience to beware of false claims by the Labour Party that they oppose the war in Gaza. She is sending a clear message to the elite: “We will not be silenced”.
Mike Sargent, a retired railway worker who, as a member of the executive of transport union RMT, attended the formation of TUSC in 2010, opened the meeting. He explained how the RMT, together with other trade unions and the Socialist Party, set up TUSC, as a step towards building a mass workers’ party. Mike said that capitalism has failed, and that we need to build a socialist society for the benefit of all.
A courageous young woman, who had been racially abused at Folkestone railway station in November 2023, after returning from a demonstration against the war on Gaza, also spoke. She urged the community to stand in solidarity with Momtaz.
